In November of 2016, Instagram rolled out a shoppable posts feature where posts from retailers could show shoppable tags.

The way a shoppable tag works is that retailers tag products in their photo like they would if they were tagging a person. Product tags are only revealed if users tap the tagged “tap to view products” button on the bottom left-hand corner of the post.

After users have selected their product of choice, they are able to see an in-app details page with the product’s description, price, additional photos and a “shop now” button that allow users to buy the item on the retailer’s website.

With shoppable tags, brands will no longer have to put “link in bio” in their photo captions. Remember, organic posts on Instagram are not permitted to have links. Businesses can now make their organic posts shoppable by tagging a product like they’re tagging a person in a photo.

The shoppable posts feature was only available for iOS users in the US when it was first introduced. Now Instagram is launching its shoppable posts feature for business accounts to 8 other countries. These include Canada, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Australia.

Instagram’s shopping feature is meant to:

  • Make it easier for brands to drive followers to their ecommerce store.
  • Inspire shoppers by connecting them with trend-seeking customers who love to discover and explore new products on Instagram.
  • Boost sales and provide a higher ROI for business using the platform.

Instagram plans to monetize the shoppable posts feature by allowing business users to display shoppable photos to people who don’t already follow them.

Instagram’s goal is to create a seamless shopping experience for its users so that shopping directly on Instagram is easier.
