Marketing Audit vs SEO Audit: Which Does Your Vancouver Business Need?

    Quick answer

A marketing audit asks whether you are spending in the right places at all. An SEO audit asks why one channel — organic search — is not producing what it should. Buy the marketing audit when the allocation question is open; buy the SEO audit when search is already the priority and the problem is execution. Neither is useful without prioritised findings, named owners and a measurement plan agreed up front.

    • Scope matrix: what each audit does and does not cover
    • Decision criteria for which to buy first
    • Questions to ask a provider before you sign

Two Vancouver businesses ask us for "an audit" in the same week and mean completely different things. One wants to know whether their budget is in the right channels at all. The other knows search matters and wants to know why their site is not showing up. Buying the wrong one wastes a quarter.

Here is how the two differ in scope, when each is the right purchase, and what a useful deliverable looks like either way.

    Decision criteria

    Choose the marketing audit when:

    • You cannot say which channel produced last quarter's best clients.
    • Spend is split across several channels with no stated hypothesis.
    • Leads arrive but do not convert, and nobody owns the handoff.
    • Reporting exists per channel but nothing rolls up to revenue.

    Choose the SEO audit when:

    • Organic search is already an agreed priority.
    • You have visibility without clicks — impressions accumulating at positions that never produce traffic.
    • A migration, redesign or template change preceded a decline.
    • Similar pages appear to compete with each other for the same phrases.

What we see in our own data

For our own site, Google Search Console recorded 44 impressions for "marketing audit services vancouver" at an average position of 14.73, and 40 impressions for "marketing audit vancouver" at 22.60, between August 6 and September 2, 2026. Both had zero clicks. Those figures are ThinkProfits visibility observations — how often our pages appeared — not search volume, and not a measure of the Vancouver market. We mention them because they illustrate the exact pattern above: presence at positions that do not earn a click is a scope-and-intent problem, and it is the kind of thing an audit is supposed to name.

    What the deliverable should contain

    1. Findings tied to evidence. Each finding cites the data it came from, not an assertion.
    2. Stated impact. What improves if this is fixed, and roughly by how much confidence.
    3. Effort and owner. Who does the work, in which system.
    4. A sequence. An ordered roadmap, not an undifferentiated list.
    5. A measurement plan. Which metrics, which window, which definition of a qualified outcome.
    6. An implementation handoff. Enough detail that a developer or writer can act without a second discovery call.

    Questions to ask a provider

    • What data sources will you use, and what will you not be able to see?
    • Will findings be prioritised, and on what basis?
    • Who implements — you, us, or a third party?
    • What does the measurement plan look like, and who agrees it?
    • What claims will you avoid making because the data does not support them?

That last question is the useful one. A provider who cannot name the limits of their own evidence will happily present estimates as facts.

    Implementation handoff

An audit ends when the work starts, not when the document is delivered. Agree three things before the final call: who holds the roadmap, how change dates are annotated in reporting, and when the next review happens. Without annotations, nobody can tell six weeks later whether a movement came from your fixes or from the market.

Our SEO audit services page sets out the channel-depth version, digital marketing strategy covers the allocation version, and reporting dashboards explains how we annotate and measure the work afterwards. Broader SEO services pick up where the audit leaves off.
