Quick answer
SEO wins a place in a results list, AEO wins a quote inside an answer, and GEO targets generative surfaces specifically. They are not three budgets — they share one foundation of crawlable, accurate, well-structured content. Google's 2026 generative AI guidance says core SEO foundations still apply, and Google confirmed worldwide rollout of dedicated generative AI Search Console reports on August 31, 2026.
- One shared foundation, three different goals
- Fix crawlability and entity accuracy before anything else
- Each discipline needs its own evidence and measurement
Three acronyms, three sales pitches, and a Vancouver business owner trying to work out whether they now need to buy three things instead of one. The short version: no. They overlap far more than the marketing suggests, and the sequence matters more than the labels.
What each one is actually trying to win
- SEO — a position in a list of results, so someone clicks through to your site.
- AEO — answer engine optimization. Being retrieved and quoted inside an answer, wherever that answer is assembled.
- GEO — generative engine optimization. The same goal narrowed to generative surfaces: AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude.
SEO wants a click. AEO and GEO want a citation, and the click is a bonus. That single difference drives everything below.
The comparison matrix
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank and earn the click | Be quoted in an answer | Be a cited source in generative results |
| Unit of work | The page | The passage | The entity and the passage |
| Evidence it needs | Relevance, links, technical health | Checkable facts, clear structure | Consistent identity, citable claims |
| Primary measurement | Clicks, impressions, CTR, position | Citation checks on a fixed prompt set | Generative AI impressions plus engine checks |
| Typical time to signal | Weeks to months | Weeks, and unstable | Weeks, and highly variable by engine |
| Main failure mode | Thin or slow pages | Prose with nothing extractable | Blocked crawlers, contradictory entity data |
The shared foundation
All three read the same website. Before any of them can work, you need pages that can be crawled and rendered, a site that loads quickly, an identity that matches everywhere it appears, structured data that validates, and content that says something checkable. Google's 2026 generative AI guidance makes the same point in Google's own words: core SEO foundations still apply.
That is why we almost never sell "GEO" to a business whose service pages take six seconds to load. The generative surfaces are reading the slow, thin pages too.
How to choose your priorities
- Foundations fail the audit? Fix those first. Nothing else compounds until they are right.
- Buyers still search and click? Most local service businesses in Vancouver are still here. Weight toward SEO and local SEO, with AEO structure applied to the content you were writing anyway.
- Buyers research through assistants? Common in B2B, software and considered purchases. Add AEO work on evidence quality and a recorded citation baseline.
- Category already answered inside AI Overviews? GEO work on entity consistency and citable claims earns its place — measured against Google's generative AI reporting, which Google confirmed rolled out worldwide on August 31, 2026.
What each discipline cannot promise
SEO cannot promise a position. AEO and GEO cannot promise a citation count, because no provider controls how an engine assembles an answer on a given day. Anyone quoting a guaranteed number of ChatGPT mentions is selling something they do not own. What is fair to expect is a measured baseline, work on the signals within your control, and honest re-measurement on stated dates.
One measurement caution to carry into every report: impressions of any kind describe your site's visibility, never how many people searched for a topic.
If you want help deciding where your budget belongs, our SEO services, AEO services and GEO services pages set out what each engagement covers — but read the foundation section above before choosing between them.
