Most underperforming Google Ads accounts are not losing money in the auction — they are losing it after the click. The bid is fine, the keyword is fine, and then the visitor lands on a page that loads slowly, says something different from the ad, buries the form, or fails to record a conversion at all. This checklist walks the eleven areas worth auditing on every landing page that receives paid traffic in 2026.
Work through it page by page, on a phone as well as a desktop, and record a pass or fail for each item rather than a general impression.
1. Destination integrity
- The final URL returns a 200 status — no redirect chains, no soft 404s, no parameter-stripped landing.
- The page is not blocked by robots rules or a noindex directive if it also needs organic visibility.
- HTTPS is enforced, with no mixed-content warnings.
- The page still exists after every site deployment. Broken final URLs quietly disable ads or waste spend.
2. Message match
- The headline echoes the ad's core promise using the same language, not a brand slogan.
- The offer in the ad (free consultation, quote, discount, demo) appears above the fold.
- Location or service-area wording matches what the ad targeted.
- The primary call to action is visible without scrolling at a 390 px viewport width.
3. Forms
- Only the fields you genuinely need to qualify a lead — every extra field costs conversions.
- Correct input types and autocomplete attributes so mobile keyboards and autofill work.
- Inline validation with clear, specific error text.
- Visible spam protection that does not block real users, and a working fallback if the check fails.
- A phone number that is tappable, and a booking link if that is the preferred action.
4. Consent and privacy
- A consent mechanism that matches your jurisdiction and your data collection.
- Consent Mode configured so measurement behaves correctly when a visitor declines.
- A privacy policy linked from the form area, describing what you collect and why.
- The consent banner does not obscure the headline or the CTA on mobile.
5. Mobile UX
- No horizontal scrolling, no text under 16 px in body copy, tap targets at least 44 px.
- Sticky elements do not consume more than a fraction of the viewport.
- Interstitials and pop-ups do not fire before the visitor has read anything.
- The page is tested on a real mid-range Android device, not only a desktop emulator.
6. Core Web Vitals and speed
- Largest Contentful Paint measured on a throttled mobile connection, not a fast office network.
- Hero images sized and compressed appropriately, with dimensions set to prevent layout shift.
- Third-party scripts audited — chat widgets, heatmaps and tag managers are common LCP offenders.
- No layout shift after fonts and consent banners load.
7. Conversion tracking
- Every meaningful action — form submit, call, booking, chat — fires a distinct conversion.
- Conversions are verified end to end with a real test submission, not assumed from tag presence.
- Primary and secondary conversions are correctly categorized so bidding optimizes toward revenue-producing actions.
- Enhanced conversions and offline import are configured if your sales cycle closes off-site.
- Values are attached where possible, so reporting shows revenue rather than raw counts. Our reporting page shows what that looks like end to end.
8. Final URL expansion and AI Max readiness
Google has signalled that Dynamic Search Ads and certain legacy features begin upgrading into AI Max, with a rollout announced for September 2026 — confirm the live announcement and your own account notifications before changing anything, as timelines move.
- Decide deliberately whether final URL expansion is on, and know which pages it can send traffic to.
- Every page eligible to receive expanded traffic passes items 1–7 above, not just your designated landing page.
- Thin, outdated or internal pages are excluded so they cannot become ad destinations.
- Report by landing page after enabling expansion, so you can see where traffic actually went. Our AI Max checklist covers the account-side settings.
9. URL controls and tracking parameters
- Tracking templates and final URL suffixes are set at the account level and tested for parameter loss.
- GCLID survives every redirect the page performs.
- Parameters do not create duplicate indexable URLs; canonical tags self-reference the clean URL.
- Page functionality is unaffected when parameters are appended.
10. Accessibility
- Text and button contrast meets WCAG AA.
- Form inputs have real labels, not placeholder-only text.
- The full conversion path is completable by keyboard, with visible focus states.
- Images carry meaningful alt text, and headings follow a logical order under a single H1.
11. Failure states
- Failed submissions show a persistent, readable error — not a message that disappears in two seconds.
- The success state is unmistakable and tells the visitor what happens next.
- Someone is alerted if form delivery breaks, so a silent outage does not run for a week.
- The page degrades gracefully if a third-party script fails to load.
Where the Free SEO Audit Tool fits — and where it does not
Our Free SEO Audit Tool is a fast first diagnostic for the page-level items above: it checks technical health, on-page structure and AI search visibility for a URL. It is not a conversion test and it is not a Google Ads account audit — it cannot see your conversion actions, your bidding, your consent flow or your form delivery. Use it to catch obvious page problems in a minute, then do the tracking, consent and account work by hand.
Turning the audit into a fix list
Rank findings by money at risk, not by effort. Broken or missing conversion tracking comes first, because it corrupts every optimization decision downstream. Then message match and form friction, which move conversion rate directly. Then speed, accessibility and failure states. If the page needs a structural rebuild rather than patches, that is a web design project, and it is usually cheaper than another quarter of paid traffic converting at half its potential.
