Google Ads AI Max for Vancouver PPC Campaigns: What to Check First

    TP
    thinkprofits.com

Google Ads AI Max asks you to hand three decisions to the system at once: which queries you match, what your ad says, and which page the click lands on. For a well-instrumented account with broad coverage, that can find demand your keyword list was missing. For a Vancouver service business with a tight service area and a handful of conversion events a month, it can just as easily buy volume you cannot service.

The difference is almost entirely in what you check before you turn it on. Here is that checklist.

    What AI Max actually changes

AI Max is a bundle applied to Search campaigns. Three components do most of the work:

    • Broader query matching — Google matches searches related to your keywords, your landing pages and your existing assets, not just the keywords you listed.
    • Text customization — headlines and descriptions can be generated or adapted per query, drawing on your landing page content.
    • Final URL expansion — the click can be routed to a different page on your site if the system judges it a better match, subject to URL rules you define.

Each is individually controllable. Treating them as one on/off switch is the most common mistake we see.

Check 1: Is your conversion tracking good enough to steer it?

Broad AI matching optimises toward whatever you have told it success looks like. If form submissions are double-counted, if a thank-you page fires on refresh, if calls under 30 seconds count as leads, AI Max will faithfully buy more of the wrong thing — faster than manual keywords ever could.

Before enabling anything, confirm: one primary conversion action per goal, deduplication in place, realistic conversion values, call tracking with a minimum duration threshold, and — if your sale closes days or weeks later — offline conversion import from your CRM. Accounts converting fewer than about 30 times a month should fix volume or use a value-based proxy before testing broad matching at all.

Check 2: Which pages are eligible to receive traffic?

Final URL expansion is where local accounts get hurt. Left open, it can send paid clicks to blog posts, careers pages, thank-you pages, or a service page for a city you do not serve. Before enabling:

    • List the pages that are genuinely allowed to receive paid traffic — commercial service pages with a clear offer and conversion path.
    • Apply URL rules restricting expansion to those paths.
    • Explicitly exclude blog, news, careers, policy and confirmation pages.
    • Spot-check every eligible page on mobile: does it load fast, state the service and the area, and offer a call or form above the fold?

Expansion cannot rescue a weak landing page. It just distributes the weakness across more queries.

Check 3: Can you live with the ad copy it writes?

Text customization is a real advantage for query relevance and a real risk for anyone with compliance constraints. Legal, medical, financial and trades accounts all have wording they must or must not use. Review generated assets in the asset report during the first two weeks, exclude phrases you cannot stand behind, and keep at least a few pinned headlines carrying your non-negotiable positioning.

One practical note: because customization draws on landing page text, thin or vague page copy produces thin or vague ads. Tightening the page usually improves the ad.

Check 4: Is your geography actually locked down?

Broader matching means broader query variety within your targeted area, and more chances for out-of-area intent to slip in. For a Vancouver business:

    • Use presence-based location targeting, not "presence or interest".
    • Exclude regions you will not travel to, explicitly.
    • Add negative keywords for other cities you rank near — this is where budget quietly leaks.
    • Review the search terms report weekly for the first month, not monthly.

This matters more than the impression counts suggest. Broad visibility at low relevance is a familiar trap on the organic side too: our PPC services page recorded 16,053 impressions against 2 clicks in Search Console between June 30 and July 27, 2026, at an average position of 22.30, while our Vancouver PPC page saw 2,153 impressions and 1 click at position 39.25. Being visible to the wrong query, paid or organic, produces nothing.

Check 5: Do you have a control to compare against?

Enable AI Max on one campaign, keep a comparable campaign unchanged, and hold budget, bidding strategy and creative steady elsewhere for the duration. Run it a full conversion cycle plus a learning buffer — usually three to four weeks — and judge it on cost per qualified lead, not clicks, impressions or raw conversion count.

Ask sales or reception whether lead quality changed. That signal arrives before the data does, and it is the one that matters. If you need the wider framework for how PPC economics work alongside organic, start with our PPC advertising guide and SEO vs PPC.

    Signals to roll it back

    • Search terms drifting toward informational or out-of-area queries that do not convert.
    • Cost per qualified lead rising even as total conversions climb.
    • Clicks landing on pages you did not intend to advertise.
    • Ad copy appearing that your industry's regulator or your brand team would object to.
    • Sales reporting a drop in lead quality that the dashboard has not caught up to yet.

Roll back the individual component causing the problem — usually URL expansion or text customization — before abandoning the test entirely.

    Frequently asked questions

What is Google Ads AI Max?

A bundle of AI features for Search campaigns covering broader query matching, ad text customization and final URL expansion, enabled at the campaign or ad group level.

Should I enable AI Max on a small local account?

Only as a controlled test. Accounts with thin conversion data or a narrow service area are the most likely to see volume rise while lead quality falls.

What is final URL expansion and should I restrict it?

It lets Google route a click to a different page on your site. Restrict it with URL rules to commercial service pages, and exclude blog, careers and confirmation pages.

Can I stop AI Max from rewriting my ads?

Yes — text customization can be disabled separately, and you can pin required headlines and exclude phrases you cannot legally or contractually use.

What conversion tracking is required first?

Deduplicated conversions with realistic values, call tracking with a duration threshold, and CRM or offline import if your sale closes later.

How long should the test run?

Three to four weeks for most lead-gen accounts, longer under roughly 30 monthly conversions. Judge on cost per qualified lead.
