Quick answer
For a home-service business, answer engine optimisation starts with an answer inventory: every real customer question captured once, with a short answer, its conditions, the evidence behind it, a named owner, a destination page and a review date. Publish from that single source, and the contradictions that make a business hard to quote disappear.
- The seven fields every inventory entry needs
- Where the real questions actually come from
- A seven-step workflow from question to published page
Home-service websites rarely fail because they lack content. They fail because the same question is answered three different ways on three different pages, none of them dated, and none of them owned by anyone. An answer engine reading that site has no way to decide which version is true, and neither does a customer.
Before writing anything new, build the inventory.
The seven fields
| Field | What goes in it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Question | In the customer's words, not yours | "Why is my furnace blowing cold air?" |
| Short answer | Two or three sentences, self-contained | The most common causes, in order |
| Conditions | When the answer changes | Equipment age, system type, permit rules |
| Evidence | Where the answer comes from | Service manual, code reference, internal data |
| Owner | A named person, not a department | Service manager |
| Destination | The one page this answer belongs on | Furnace repair service page |
| Review date | When it must be re-checked | Before next heating season |
Where the questions come from
Not a keyword tool. For home services the highest-value questions arrive by phone, usually urgently. Pull them from call notes, dispatch records, technician debriefs, quote follow-ups, review text and the inbox. Ask the people who answer the phone which three questions they are tired of answering. That list is your first sprint.
The seven-step workflow
- Collect. Two weeks of real questions from calls, quotes and reviews, recorded verbatim.
- Deduplicate. Group phrasings of the same question and pick the customer's most common wording.
- Answer once. Draft the short answer, then the conditions that change it.
- Evidence. Attach the source. If nobody can supply one, the answer is an opinion and should be labelled as one.
- Assign. A named owner and a review date per entry.
- Place. One destination page per answer. Cross-link rather than duplicate.
- Publish and check parity. The visible copy and any structured data must say the same thing.
Local context is part of the answer
Permit requirements, seasonal demand, building stock and service radius change the correct answer for a home-service business. An answer that would be true anywhere is usually too vague to be useful and too generic to be quoted. State the municipality or region when it matters.
Foundations still apply
Google's guide to generative search, updated July 10, 2026, states that core SEO foundations remain relevant: crawlability, useful page experience, and reduced duplication. An answer inventory is a content discipline layered on top of those. It does not replace them, and it will not rescue a site that cannot be crawled or that loads badly on a phone in a driveway.
What we cannot tell you
We have no reliable measure of how often any assistant cites a given business, and we did not estimate one. Between August 8 and September 4, 2026, Google Search Console recorded 185 impressions for "aeo services" at an average position of 15.97 with zero clicks for our own site; the home-services variant registered a single impression. That is a visibility observation about our pages, not a demand estimate, which is why this topic sits on the roadmap for qualitative reasons rather than quantitative ones.
Our AEO services page explains the wider programme, with trade-specific detail on plumbing, HVAC and electricians, and local SEO covers the map and proximity signals that sit alongside it.
