    Technical SEO Audit Pricing in Canada: What Are You Actually Paying For?

    Ask three Canadian agencies to quote a technical SEO audit for the same website and you will get three numbers that do not resemble each other. That is not evidence that two of them are wrong. It is evidence that "technical SEO audit" describes a range of work so wide that the phrase alone tells you almost nothing about what you are buying.

    This article does not invent a national price range, because no credible market-wide figure exists to quote. Instead it explains the variables that actually move the price, what a defensible scope contains, and how to compare quotes so that the cheapest one is not simply the one that promised the least.

    Why "audit" means five different things

    The word covers at least five distinct products, and confusion between them causes most pricing disputes:

    • An automated snapshot. A crawler runs, a PDF is exported, findings appear in tool-default severity order. Fast, cheap, often free. Useful for triage.
    • A reviewed snapshot. The same crawl, but a human removes false positives and adds commentary. Better, still fundamentally tool-shaped.
    • A diagnostic audit. A specialist reproduces issues, checks rendered output against source, reconciles crawl data with Search Console and analytics, and explains cause rather than symptom.
    • A diagnostic audit with implementation specs. Everything above, plus developer-ready tickets: what to change, in which template, with acceptance criteria and a test plan.
    • An audit engagement. The above, plus verification after deployment and re-testing of what shipped.

    Each is legitimate. They are just not substitutes. A quote is only comparable to another quote when both describe the same tier.

    The variables that actually change the price

    Template count, not page count

    Clients tend to describe their site by page count — "we have about 4,000 pages". For audit effort, the number that matters is how many distinct templates generate those pages. A 40,000-page catalogue built from six templates is often less work than a 300-page site where every page was hand-built and nothing is consistent. Ask any prospective auditor whether they price on templates or on pages; the answer reveals how they think.

    Rendering dependency

    A server-rendered site can be assessed largely from source HTML. A site where content, internal links or metadata are assembled client-side requires rendered-DOM comparison for every template, testing with JavaScript disabled and enabled, and verification that the rendered output is stable rather than timing-dependent. This single variable can double the analysis time.

    Platform and stack

    Platform matters less for the diagnosis and more for the remediation path. A well-understood CMS with template access is straightforward. A locked-down SaaS platform where canonical tags cannot be edited changes the recommendations entirely — the auditor has to find achievable workarounds rather than ideal fixes, which is more work, not less.

    International and multi-location complexity

    Bilingual Canadian sites, provincial location directories and cross-border US/CA targeting all add real analysis: hreflang reciprocity, per-market canonical conflicts, duplicate content across near-identical location pages, and country-level index coverage. Each language or market layer adds verification work that scales with the number of templates.

    Access to evidence

    Audits get cheaper and better when the auditor is given what they need: Search Console with full property coverage, analytics, server or CDN log files, and a staging environment. Without log files, questions about crawl budget and bot behaviour become inference rather than evidence. Without staging, every recommendation carries deployment risk. Restricted access does not reduce cost — it shifts cost into guesswork.

    Whether implementation is in scope

    The largest single differentiator between quotes is often whether the number includes anyone actually changing anything. A diagnostic document and a delivered fix are wildly different commitments.

    What a defensible scope contains

    Regardless of price, a professional technical audit should cover these workstreams, and the proposal should name them explicitly.

    Crawl and architecture

    • Full crawl with configuration disclosed: user agent, rendering mode, depth, respect for robots rules.
    • Site depth distribution and click depth to money pages.
    • Orphan pages identified by reconciling crawl, sitemaps, analytics and Search Console.
    • Redirect inventory: chains, loops, soft 404s, parameter handling.
    • Internal link distribution and anchor patterns across templates.

    Index eligibility

    • Page indexing report reconciled against the crawl, category by category.
    • Robots directives audited in both HTTP headers and HTML.
    • Canonical correctness per template, including self-referencing behaviour on parameterised URLs.
    • Sitemap accuracy: only canonical, indexable, 200-status URLs.
    • Duplicate and near-duplicate clusters identified with a consolidation decision for each.

    Rendering

    • Source HTML versus rendered DOM comparison per template.
    • Verification that primary content, internal links and metadata exist in the rendered output.
    • Behaviour when key scripts fail or time out.
    • Blocked resources that prevent rendering.

    Structured data and eligibility

    • Validation against current documented types, not deprecated ones.
    • Consistency between markup and visible content.
    • Removal of markup that promises rich results no longer supported.

    Page experience and field data

    • Core Web Vitals from field data, segmented by template and device — not just lab scores.
    • Identification of the specific element or resource causing each failing metric.
    • Mobile parity: same content, same links, same markup.

    Output quality

    The deliverable should be readable by two audiences at once. An executive summary that names the three highest-impact fixes and what they are expected to change. A prioritised issue register with severity, evidence, affected template, effort estimate and acceptance criteria. And developer tickets that a build team can pick up without a translation meeting.

    How to compare quotes

    Put the quotes side by side and ask the same six questions of each. The answers, not the totals, tell you what you are comparing.

    1. What is the unit of scope? Templates, pages, or hours. Anything priced by page count on a large site deserves a follow-up question.
    2. Which workstreams are included? Ask specifically about rendering verification and log analysis — these are the two most commonly quietly omitted.
    3. What evidence will accompany each finding? A finding without a reproducible example is an opinion.
    4. How will findings be prioritised? By tool severity, or by expected impact against your commercial pages?
    5. What does the handoff look like? Ask to see a redacted sample ticket from a previous engagement.
    6. What happens after delivery? Is there a review call, a re-test window, or nothing?

    Where a cheaper quote answers these as well as an expensive one, take the cheaper quote. Usually it does not — and the gap explains the price.

    Red flags

    • Delivery in 24 to 48 hours. Data collection alone rarely completes that fast on a real site. This is an export with a cover page.
    • A findings count as a selling point. "247 issues found" measures crawler defaults, not business impact.
    • Ranking guarantees. No one controls ranking. Anyone claiming otherwise is either misinformed or counting on you not checking.
    • No request for access. An auditor who does not ask for Search Console is auditing from the outside and cannot diagnose index coverage.
    • Recommendations with no owner. "Improve site speed" is not a recommendation. "Preload the hero image on the product template; target LCP under 2.5s on mobile" is.
    • Deprecated advice. Keyword density, meta keywords, or rich result types that were retired. It signals a template that has not been maintained.

    Budget for implementation, not just the report

    The most common way audit spending is wasted is entirely predictable: the audit is bought, delivered, well received, and never implemented, because nobody budgeted development time. The report ages, the platform changes, and eighteen months later a fresh audit is commissioned to rediscover the same issues.

    Avoid it with three decisions made before the audit starts:

    • Reserve development capacity. A rough planning ratio many teams find realistic is that implementation takes more effort than the audit itself. Book the sprint before the findings arrive.
    • Name an owner. One person accountable for moving tickets, not a distribution list.
    • Agree the verification step. Each fix gets re-tested, and the register is updated with what shipped and when. This is also what makes the next audit cheaper.

    Where automated checks fit

    Automated tools are not the enemy of good auditing; they are the first ten minutes of it. They are excellent at establishing whether there is an obvious problem worth investigating and at monitoring for regressions after fixes ship. What they cannot do is weigh two findings against each other in the context of your revenue, or tell you that a canonical tag is technically valid but pointing at the wrong page.

    One argument occasionally used against technical spend is that AI-generated answers have made classic technical SEO less relevant. The opposite is closer to true. Google's July 10, 2026 guidance is explicit that crawlability, index eligibility, JavaScript handling, duplicate control and page experience remain the foundations for visibility in generative-AI Search surfaces.

    The practical implication is simple. A page that cannot be crawled reliably, whose content only appears after a fragile client-side render, or that is one of six near-duplicates competing for the same canonical, is not a candidate for citation. Technical work is now a prerequisite for two channels rather than one — which is a reason to scope it properly, not a reason to skip it.     • Define which of the five audit tiers you actually need before requesting quotes.
    • Provide Search Console, analytics, log file and staging access up front.
    • Require template-level scoping and ask what happens if template count is higher than assumed.
