Confessions of a Black Friday Shopper

Today is Black Friday, hands down the busiest shopping day of the year in the U.S.

It's one of my most awaited times of the year \u2013 that one glorious day when shops slash prices that are never seen before in the entire year. From last season's couture to the latest electronic gadgets, there's something out there that has just become irresistibly affordable.

So the southbound trek begins for many Canadians, clogging up border crossings from coast to coast. The American stores flourished while the Canadian stores pondered. Clearly they were missing out on all the retail action!

Then in 2012, the whole shopping concept was introduced by the big stores in Canada, forever changing the timeline and landscape of my shopping tradition. It now stretches from Black Friday until well into the new year right here at home.

Online shopping has evolved along with the demands of in-store shopping. Whereas stores previously advertised in-store pricing only, they have made the same items available for purchase online at the same sale prices. More and more people are now shopping online when stores "opened" at midnight, paving an onslaught of transaction data across the Internet.

Secure shopping has become one of the most significant concerns for online stores and shoppers alike, especially during the holiday rush. Mandated by law to protect the privacy of customers information, online stores are required to install security certificates on their websites that encrypt or scramble payment information as it travels across the Internet, making it unreadable by prying eyes.

Fighting my way to the checkout counter, elbow-to-elbow with a mob of shoppers across the border, shopping cart of drop-dead basement bargain priced goodies in tow, is now a thing of the past.

I'm now shopping safely and securely from the comforts of my own home while keeping an eye on the next shopping spree that is Cyber Monday.
